Soriana Lounge Chair by Afra & Tobia Scarpa for Cassina, Italy
Iconic Soriana lounge chair designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Cassina in 1969. The Soriana became one of the most recognizable Italian lounge designs of the 20th century and was awarded the Compasso d’Oro in 1970 for its innovative approach to comfort and form.
The design is defined by its generous, sculptural volume where the upholstery is gathered and held in place by the characteristic external chrome-plated steel clamp. Instead of relying on an internal rigid frame, the chair’s soft structure allows the padding to create its distinctive relaxed and enveloping shape. This construction gives the Soriana its signature combination of visual softness and exceptional comfort.
This example has been newly upholstered in a deep olive green velvet, giving the chair a rich texture and a contemporary look while respecting the original character of the design. The chrome clamp remains in very good condition and beautifully contrasts with the soft upholstery.
A timeless Italian design classic that works equally well as a statement lounge chair in a living space or as a sculptural piece in a curated interior.
